Inside Lipemedical’s Specialized Approach to Lipedema Surgery

Sponsor Feature

For many women living with Lipedema, finding a surgeon is only part of the challenge. Finding a team that truly understands the disease is often much harder.

Lipemedical was built around that need.

As one of Europe’s leading Lipedema surgical centers, Lipemedical focuses exclusively on Lipedema diagnosis and treatment. Their team performs more than 150 Lipedema surgeries every month and has built an entire clinical model around a single condition. While many surgical practices divide their time between cosmetic procedures and Lipedema patients, every aspect of Lipemedical is dedicated to understanding, treating, and managing Lipedema.

That level of specialization has allowed the team to develop a deep understanding of both the disease itself and the challenges patients face long before they ever arrive for treatment.

Led by One of Spain’s Lipedema Pioneers

At the center of Lipemedical is Dr. Burgos de la Obra, Medical Director and Chief Surgeon of Lipemedical. Widely recognized as one of Spain’s pioneers in Lipedema surgery, Dr. Burgos was the first Spanish surgeon to dedicate his practice exclusively to the treatment of Lipedema while helping advance the use of Water Assisted Liposuction for Lipedema patients.

His philosophy has helped shape the foundation of Lipemedical and continues to guide the team’s approach today.

Dr. Burgos believes Lipedema should be treated as a medical condition, not a cosmetic concern. For him, the goal is not simply changing how a patient looks, but helping reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and prevent disease progression through appropriate treatment and greater awareness.

As he explains, “Lipedema should be approached as a medical problem and not as a purely aesthetic condition. This disease can and must be effectively treated to free the patient from the symptoms and prevent progression.”

That perspective has helped establish Lipemedical as a center dedicated not only to surgery, but also to advancing education around Lipedema diagnosis, treatment, and long term patient care.

Why Specialization Matters

Lipedema surgery is often grouped under the broad category of liposuction, but patients quickly learn that treating Lipedema requires a very different level of expertise.

Many patients arrive after years of symptoms, unsuccessful treatments, chronic pain, mobility challenges, and frustration from being misunderstood or misdiagnosed. Others arrive after previous surgeries that failed to fully address their symptoms or left them searching for better outcomes.

In fact, approximately 20 percent of the patients treated by the center have undergone prior procedures elsewhere before seeking additional treatment. Cases that many providers might consider complex have become part of the team’s everyday practice.

Years of treating large volumes of Lipedema patients have reinforced an important reality: no two cases are exactly alike. Some patients present with significant fibrosis. Others have advanced disease progression, prior surgeries, or unique anatomical challenges. Building a practice around Lipedema alone has allowed the team to create highly refined protocols designed specifically for these situations.

Treating the Patient, Not Just the Procedure

The team places significant emphasis on patient education, realistic expectations, and careful surgical planning. Initial consultations often last up to an hour, giving patients the opportunity to discuss their history, symptoms, previous treatments, concerns, and goals while allowing the surgical team to determine whether surgery is truly the right next step.

Not every patient is immediately approved for surgery.

In some cases, conservative treatment may be recommended first. In others, additional medical evaluation may be necessary before moving forward. The team believes one of the most important responsibilities of a surgeon is knowing when surgery is appropriate and when it is not.

That philosophy reflects a broader commitment to balancing outcomes with patient safety.

Rather than promising perfection, the goal is to reduce symptoms, improve mobility, slow disease progression, and help patients achieve the best possible long term result with the fewest procedures necessary.

A Surgical Philosophy Built on Precision

One of the most interesting aspects of the center’s approach is how they describe their work.

Rather than viewing surgery simply as volume removal, the team sees it as a highly detailed process that requires constant reassessment throughout the procedure. Their focus is not solely on how much tissue is removed, but on creating balanced, natural looking outcomes while preserving safety and supporting long term symptom improvement.

The team performs Water Assisted Liposuction and has refined its protocols over years of treating thousands of patients. Their approach emphasizes meticulous technique, careful contouring, and extensive attention to detail throughout every stage of the procedure.

This commitment to precision has become one of the defining characteristics of the center and one of the reasons many patients travel significant distances seeking treatment there.

Caring for Patients From Around the World

Today, approximately 70 percent of patients treated at Lipemedical travel from outside Spain, with many arriving from North America, Australia, South America, and across Europe. About 20 percent travel from entirely different continents.

Supporting international patients requires far more than surgical expertise.

The team has built an extensive process designed to guide patients from their initial consultation through recovery. Virtual evaluations, pre operative planning, coordination of testing, detailed educational materials, ongoing communication, and post operative follow up all help create a smoother experience for patients traveling long distances for care.

Patients remain in close contact with the team throughout recovery and continue receiving guidance after returning home. This emphasis on communication and continuity of care has become an important part of the patient experience and reflects the center’s belief that successful outcomes depend on much more than the surgery itself.

Making Specialized Care More Accessible

One topic that is rarely discussed openly in healthcare is affordability.

Lipemedical has taken a clear position on this issue. The team believes Lipedema is a disease that deserves treatment, not a cosmetic luxury reserved for a small group of patients. Because many individuals require multiple procedures and often face limited insurance coverage, maintaining reasonable pricing has remained an important part of the center’s mission.

Their goal is to balance high quality care with accessibility, helping more patients access specialized treatment without creating unnecessary financial barriers.
